1st May 1988 – Dundalk win FAI Cup and Double.

dundalk fai cup 1988 celebrationsI’ve seen Dundalk win 5 FAI Cup Finals.   My favourite final was, the most recent one, in 2002 in Tolka Park, when as underdogs, we beat Bohs 2-1. Magic day.  The pics here, though, are from the 1988 final.   Over 22,000 at game but a very poor final, with the Town beating Derry 1-0. Massive blow for Derry & all their fans.  Derrys manager (ex Dundalk) Jim McLaughlin was criticised for buying some players specifically for the final!

(See Opinion 1&2 links below for interesting Irish Independent comment)

There was a great turn out to welcome the team home and nobody let the cup fall under the bus.  It was a Sunday, May 1st, but no Bank Holiday the next day. The May Bank Holiday wasn’t introduced until 1994!

In 1992, when I lived in Phibsboro and local team Bohs won the cup. The turnout to welcome Bohs ‘home’ was non existent.
