Showcase magazine covered Irish Theatre, Cabaret, Films & Cinema, Ballrooms, Bands, TV, Radio and Music Retailing. I don’t know a lot about the history of the magazine. I have a number of issues from 1967 through to 1969 but they contain no volume numbers. The last issue I have is for July-Sep 1971 by then it had changed from monthly to quarterly. With a gloss finish, it had typically 36 pages, plenty of showbiz black & white photos, reviews and […]

A 44 page black & white glossy mag (with colour front & back ) from April, 1982 in the early days of video. Lots of adverts and features on emerging video hardware and video shops/clubs (you had to pay to be a club member back then to be able to rent a movie). Shane McElhatton had a 3 page article on the future of Video Games/Arcades. It says that the Atari video game manufacturing plant in Tipperary town was the largest […]

Even Steven was situated at 150 Capel St, Dublin. Anybody got a colour pic of the building with this mural? Almost 40 years later, Celebrity Chef, Gary Rhodes opened a restaurant at this address! From Spotlight May 4 & May 18th, 1968. Shopping Pix by Frank Fennell

The second of the Youngline annuals and its no better than the 1980 version. Note the name change from Annual to Yearbook and the re-branding of the logo. The rock article, written by Ferdia McAnna, does reference lots of new bands. Anyone remember Katmandu? I think they may have also appeared on Youngline during 1980/81 and were in the same TV competition which Choice went on to win. (see earlier post about Choice – and the quest to find a copy […]

I have a soft spot for RTE’s late 70s/80s kids programme “Youngline” if only because they gave a group of unknown teenage musicians from Dundalk (who had no manager or any media or music connections) a television appearance on their progamme on the basis of a demo tape and photos that the group had sent into them. That group was Choice and you can see more about that in one of my earlier posts. The annual, like most annuals, is […]
