Yes 2011. Hard to believe that in this digital age, Fanzines, in the traditional paper format, still exist. Loserdom is one such Dublin Fanzine. Hand bound and on the go since 1996 it is created by two brothers Eugene (comics & artwork) and Anto Dillon (the rest). The most recent issue, #22, has 60 advert free pages and features a comic story called the “Punk Connection” which has lots of cool drawings of cyclists in Dublin City. I’ve scanned in […]

From 20 years ago, this Irish heavy issue of the NME, had plenty on an old fave of mine, Sean Hughes and on the man with the flowers in his mouth, Cathal Coughlan (Fatima Mansions.) It is not a joint interview/article. There is just a brief mention of Hughe’s participation in Coughlan’s side project Bubonique, but they are separate interviews. Both scanned in full below. Another scan from New Spotlight and another from Pat Egan. From his “Where its at” column, the “Irish Rave Girls” mini feature launched in August with, for some strange reason, a Norwegian, actress Julie Ege (RIP) – see pic above on left. The following week, the series started proper with a pic of a genuine Irish Rave girl each week (#1 on right above).

Now: Royal Canal Newcomen Bridge Dublin 1, 18th April 2012 Then: Newcomen Bridge, scanned from a German magazine called Geo from 1986. Two Canal boats came through the Lock here last Saturday. Despite the presence today of some cans, plastic bags and a hurley the Royal Canal looks great and is very well-kept.

This is from the Thrills section of NME, November 1988. Pic shows Arthur Mathews (left), Kieran & Paul Woodfull (centre). At their gigs, Woodfull would also play the part of a Mathews created character called Fr Ted. In the article below, the Trio joked that they were working on a screenplay called, “Last Temptation of Chris De Burgh”.

I read a lot of Shoot magazine in the 1970s and the Focus On feature was always the first page I’d check out. Even though the responses were always very similar and predictable (it was almost as if there was a template with a standard set of completed answers * see below) I was always keen to find out what TV, movies and music the players were into. Dave O’Leary was only 20 when his Focus On was published in […]
