Starlight – Irish Entertainment Magazine – April, 1976

November 28, 2011 by dubdoug

This 40 page weekly mag could easily have been called, “Starlight, with New Spotlight, incorporating Sunday World”. The lady on the left of the cover is not featured or mentioned anywhere in the mag. The colour showband picture below, or “pin up” as it was called, is Bill Ryan & Buckshot. Bay City Rollers fans, fear not, the Rollers in Ireland article will feature in a later post! Where Were You? Dublin Street Style 1950-2000 – now in the shops!

November 24, 2011 by dubdoug

Here are just 3 photos from a collection of over 800 from Gary O’Neill’s excellent “Where Were You” book, which went on sale today. Its big. And big on value with over 300 pages in a very well presented hardback package which costs €30. Although the books covers the decades 1950 to 2000, the 3 sample photos below are all from the mid and early 1980s.   From the top, its 1985, 1982 & 1981. What about that sign outside […]

Harpers Bazaar 1965 – Ireland on the Move

November 23, 2011 by dubdoug

I’ve scanned in some great photos taken by David Montgomery in various Irish places during Harpers Bazaar trip to Ireland in the summer of 1964. Glad the locals joined in for some of these fashion shots.  Scans below include Cork, Killarney, Guinness Dublin and Howth locations. More photos from this session now up on new post

Imprint issue 6 – Dublin Fanzine, October 1979

November 20, 2011 by dubdoug

This 16 page  pocket size (7″ by 8″) Dublin fanzine cost 15p back in 1979. I’ve scanned in most of the pages below.  Main feature was this early U2 interview by Shane McElhatton… Look out for the story about Belfast band Rudi splitting in the last of the scans (bottom right) above. The Atrix were another group that our band, the Scheme, played with a few times in the Baggot Inn, Dublin. The Atrix interview article by Des Traynor scanned […]

Ice Pop Culture – Part 2 – HB, The Soft Ones

November 16, 2011 by dubdoug

I remember one thing about Prince Charles. His favourite group is the Three Degrees. I remember one thing about Noel Gallagher. His favourite ice pop is a Brunch. His love for Brunch – an ice pop not available outside Ireland – came from his annual summer holidays spent in Mayo as a child. Above images selected and scanned from The Story of HB by Paul Mulhern & Kieran Fagan. The Golly Bar feature below is scanned directly from the book. […]

Survival in a Nuclear War – Advice from Irish Civil Defence – 1965

November 11, 2011 by dubdoug

This book reminds me of searching for something important like sticky tape, matches, glue, measuring tape, etc (you know, the stuff you can never find) in that drawer in the kitchen but instead, always finding this booklet getting in the way! Why didn’t we hang it up under the stairs or somewhere, using those punched holes provided in the book? Probably coudn’t find any string! *No date on the book but it was published in 1965 and 1971

RTE Youngline Yearbook 1981

November 8, 2011 by dubdoug

The second of the Youngline annuals and its no better than the 1980 version.  Note the name change from Annual to Yearbook and the re-branding of the logo. The rock article, written by Ferdia McAnna, does reference lots of new bands.  Anyone remember Katmandu? I think they may have also appeared on Youngline during 1980/81 and were in the same TV competition which Choice went on to win. (see earlier post about Choice – and the quest to find a copy […]

RTE Youngline Annual -1980

November 8, 2011 by dubdoug

I have a soft spot for RTE’s late 70s/80s kids programme “Youngline” if only because they gave a group of unknown teenage musicians from Dundalk (who had no manager or any media or music connections) a television appearance on their progamme on the basis of a demo tape and photos that the group had sent into them. That group was Choice and you can see more about that in one of my earlier posts. The annual, like most annuals, is […]
