Old Adverts #4 – Dublin Night Clubs 1974

July 28, 2011 by dubdoug

Here are 2 Ads for Dublin Night Clubs which I’ve scanned from Man Alive  mag 1974. I love the ad for Revolution. And its not just the tudor-style restaurant which does it for me. Here’s the Google street view of where the night club was in Rutland place, Dublin 1. The other ad, below, is for a much more famous club, Zhivago. This club even had posh adverts continuously running at our local cinema which made Zhivago sound like a suave, sophisticated […]

Old Adverts #3 – Dexys sack band members – March 1981

July 6, 2011 by dubdoug

Kevin Rowland of Dexys Midnight Runners, having had a few run ins with the music press, imposed a press embargo in July 1980 and would instead use their own ads in the music papers to explain the band’s position. The scan above is one of these ads. Its at a time between”Searching for the Young Soul Rebels” and “Too-Rye-Ay” when Rowland kicked out some members from the band as they had “hatched a plot to throw Kevin out and still carry […]

The Beat & Specials – Dublin’s Stardust Ballroom, 14 Jan, 1981

July 3, 2011 by dubdoug

The Beat and the Specials played a fund raising gig in the Stardust Ballroom to over 3000 people, exactly a month before that awful night on 14th February 1981 when fire swept through the Stardust killing 48 people and causing serious injury to 128 others. I had forgotten this gig took place and was only recently reminded about it when Enda Murray mentioned it in his post on this blog about the impact the tragedy had on him and a […]

Black & White – Dublin Fanzine 1979.

July 2, 2011 by dubdoug

To be honest, I had forgotten about Black and White Fanzine. It emerged from the ashes of the brilliant Heat fanzine and featured some of the same writers and designers. Here’s a photo of the first 2 issues, I think only 3 issues were published in late 1979, early 1980. From a design and layout perspective, it was still miles ahead of other fanzines.  But it wasn’t as good as Heat, lacking its predecessors humour and opinion. I’ve scanned in 2 sample […]

Pop Tones – Dublin Fanzine 1982? featuring Some Kind of Wonderful

July 2, 2011 by dubdoug

I’m guessing this Dublin 11 fanzine ‘ Pop Tones’ came out in 1982. This particular issue contained an interview with Some Kind of Wonderful who had Dundalk lads, Pete Deane, Philip “Turkey” Mullen and Tommy Gilsenan, as key members. That’s Pete singing and Turkey on guitar in the photo. Turkey had previously acted as manager for the Scheme.  I’ve scanned in the full interview with them . Click for Page 1 & Page 2. Also in this issue was an […]
