When U2 played with the Scheme – Dandelion Market – Sept 1979

May 27, 2011 by dubdoug

The Scheme, featuring 3 ex members of NRG, were a post punk band from Dundalk. We had outgrown the punk scene and now performed 100% original material.  The Banshees and Joy Division were just some of the influences.  I was also into Wire and Adam & the Ants (loved the Dirk Wears White Sox album) and Chic. One of our songs was called “Disconnected” which had a disco beat and bass and, despite never been recorded, made it into the top […]

May 24, 2011 by dubdoug

This is the first post in BrandNewRetro that is not retro. It is now and happening, it is Ireland’s finest artist Jinx Lennon. A Jinx gig is something you must experience.  Upcoming gigs in Dublin & Cork on 26th & 27th May. “Hungry Bastard Hibernia”, his new album, a compilation of tracks that didn’t make it on to his previous 33s,  is now available for FREE download on Bandcamp.   More @ jinxlennon.com I’ve listed,on the left, my most played 25 […]

Gakbag – Irish Comic Issue no 1 – 1988

May 24, 2011 by dubdoug

I mentioned Gakbag Comic briefly in an earlier post about Drogheda mag Almost News. This Viz like comic features a lot of strips from its editor, Arthur Mathews and its assistant editor Mick Nugent  I don’t know how many issues were published . I only have this Issue & guess that it is from 1988. Tony Clayton Lea also helped out and Trendy Trevors hair was by Andre of Coolock. And doesn’t the main character in Join the Timmies (link below) […]

Dublin’s Heat 11- 1978 with U2, Boy Scouts & more

May 16, 2011 by dubdoug

More scans from the classy Dublin fanzine/magazine Heat, Vol 2, Issue 2  (aka no 11) One third of this issue is devoted to all female Dublin group The Boy Scouts. That’s them on the front cover. They were also on the back page, pages 8 to 13 and pages 27 & 28! I think the Heat lads must have liked them!  I have scanned 4 pages from this issue, see the links below. Note, the pic of the Boy Scouts […]

Issues #7,8 & 9 Triple issue (“the teenbeat mothly”) Issue #10 Geldof Night Fever Issue #11  Boy Scouts These issues & covers are excellent. More colour than the earlier issues. Man Alive – Ireland’s first magazine for men – 1974

May 14, 2011 by dubdoug

Maybe Osama had issues 1 & 2 tucked away in his hideaway, but I have here issue 3 of Man Alive, the self proclaimed “Ireland’s first magazine for men”. It was 1974 and it cost 40p. How much was 40p worth, back then? Well, in this same mag, a review of Captain Americas in Grafton St,  quoted the price of a quarter pound burger at 50p. Here are a few more page scans from the mag.

When Dominique Rocheteau frequented Drogheda Night Spots

May 12, 2011 by dubdoug

Below is an amusing collection of memories from the Drogheda music scene in the early 1980s, written by ex Drogheda man, Enda Murray, who now lives in Australia. Punk in Drogheda – the 12 O’Clock Drunken Remix (Draft copy subject to correlation and more pints) My experience of contemporary music (punk is as good a shorthand as I can find) in Drogheda came through my involvement with the New Musical Society (NMS). The NMS was a group of people who came together […]

Almost News – 1985 Co Louth Mag

May 10, 2011 by dubdoug

Many years after fanzines  Too Late & the subsequent Jump hit the streets in Dundalk, our neighbours in Drogheda produced a ‘monthly magazine’ in 1985 called Almost News. I have issues 1 & 2 both from early 1985. (see front covers above) I believe one further issue may have been published. A lot of the people involved with it have gone on to much better things. Tony Clayton-Lea (now with the Irish Times) was editor, assisted by Shane Harrison (now with BBC) […]

Dublin’s Heat Fanzine – the first 5 issues 1977

May 8, 2011 by dubdoug

Here is a photo I took today of 4 of the first 5 issues of Irish Fanzine Heat.  My brother held onto his copies. Issue 1 is missing from the collection. The first five issues of Heat were handwritten.  It was fun, it was stylish, it was Irish & was streets ahead of almost all UK fanzines.  We loved it…you can even see from the photo, how well thumbed these copies are. It was ambitious too. They called it a […]

Disc Jockey – Original Movie Poster 1951

May 4, 2011 by dubdoug

This is post no 15 on the blog and every image I’ve scanned and posted up until now has been in black and white. This is the first colour post and its ironic that it is the oldest item – dating back to 1951. I’ve never seen the movie – a  musical from 1951. Its listed in IMDB but I can’t trace any image reference to this poster on the web. I bought the poster in the mid 80s in […]
