1st May 1988 – Dundalk win FAI Cup and Double.

April 30, 2011 by dubdoug

I’ve seen Dundalk win 5 FAI Cup Finals.   My favourite final was, the most recent one, in 2002 in Tolka Park, when as underdogs, we beat Bohs 2-1. Magic day.  The pics here, though, are from the 1988 final.   Over 22,000 at game but a very poor final, with the Town beating Derry 1-0. Massive blow for Derry & all their fans.  Derrys manager (ex Dundalk) Jim McLaughlin was criticised for buying some players specifically for the final! […]

More NRG in Hot Press

April 29, 2011 by dubdoug

Wasn’t Liam Mackey clever the way he crossed out Energy  and replaced it with NRG? This Hot Press cutting is from Spring/Summer 1978.  I can’t believe we only had 5 original songs by then. Our burst of creativity must have come shortly after this article!

1984- More from Jump Fanzine

April 27, 2011 by dubdoug

Two more page scans from Jump Fanzine 1984. 1. Review list of 1984 – Forget George Orwell, this was the year Woolworths & the Magnet cinema closed in Dundalk! This page also features a cartoon by Oriel Park MC Mickey Duffy. 2. Some book reviews..for the sophisticated younger reader. Click to enlarge images

Dexys, Liverpool FC & Keith Allen all in 1 night

April 27, 2011 by dubdoug

Wednesday 30th July, 1980, a busy night in Dundalk. Dexys play the Imperial Hotel. “Geno” already a no.1 hit that year and their “Searching for the Young Soul Rebels” album is just released that week. Keith Allen supported Dexys.  No one, I know, remembers this (and there is no mention of it in the review from Too Late issue 3 below), but he goes into it, at some length, in his autobiography. Anyone out there remember? And earlier that night, […]

The City of Rubber

April 26, 2011 by dubdoug

I found an old Hot Press from Spring 1978 and it has a reference to NRG claiming we called Dundalk ‘the Irish city of Rubber’, a reference to Akron, Ohio (known as the ‘rubber city’), home to a then bustling music scene with Devo, the Dead Boys & Pere Ubu. Dundalk always had a strong manufacturing tradition. Clarks shoes, Harp Larger Brewery and Carrolls cigarettes factory were the big employers back in 1978. Hence the Akron, Ohio comparison. Some 33 years later, […]

The Wonderland of Boogie – “Too Late” Issue 3 Autumn 1980

April 20, 2011 by dubdoug

Twenty Four pages in this very well laid out issue, still costing 30 p and with no ads. Here is a scan of the cover and a page of lists, including  to the Too late team’s favourite disco songs.  Great selection, all of them crossed over to the pop charts but almost all of them are winners, then and now, over 30 years later. That list included one of our favourite groups, Chic, which reminds me of an earlier gig […]

Too late - 1978

Happy Easter! Too Late fanzine, issue 2 – Easter 1980

April 20, 2011 by dubdoug

Easter 1980 & the second issue of Too Late hits the streets. Yet again 30p, no adverts and 16 pages. The handwriting is much better than issue 1, probably because I was less involved with this one. (too busy pursuing my music career) 2 scans for you. The front cover (above) and a set of listings from the writing team of ‘reasons to be cheerful’, fave 45s & 33s & movies, hates (Sid Vicious clones!) & RIPs for the previous […]

April 19, 2011 by dubdoug

Another article from issue 1 of  Too Late 1978 by Harry who admits to his glam rock ways. “…..was getting really bored with music with only Sparks & Roxy Music to keep me going then along came 1977 & P**k!”

Down the Train Station at Midday – From Too Late Fanzine #1 1978

April 19, 2011 by dubdoug

The first issue of Dundalk fanzine Too Late issued in December 1978. Twenty hand written pages for 30p… and no adverts. This is when “cut ‘n’ paste” meant exactly that, with scissors and glue; none of your click-click lark. If you wondered what life on the road with NRG was like, read this story of their trip to their gig with the Vipers in Dublin McGonagles in Nov 1978.  Sex & Drugs & Rock ‘n’ Roll indeed. You’ll find the […]

Jump 1984

Jump Fanzine 1984 Issue 1, 1984

April 18, 2011 by dubdoug

Jump was the successor to Too Late Fanzine. This, one and only, issue came out in Nov 1984. Like Too Late it had no adverts at all and was sold on the streets and pubs of Dundalk.  Here’s the front cover and a  page which had a look at what was ‘in’ and ‘out’. Would you say “Pullovers tucked in trousers” was in or out? Related Posts: More from Jump   Too Late fanzine

A local fanzine for local people

Too Late Fanzine 1978 – 1982

April 17, 2011 by dubdoug

“Christmas 1978 and the first ever edition of Too Late hits the streets of Dundalk. A further four issues were produced during the following four years and sold around pubs & discos in Dundalk town.  While the first issue was heavily influenced by Punk fanzines, the magazines content evolved over the years into offering a humourous and irrelevant look at life in Dundalk for the young single male and female during the late 70s & early 80s.” So said the […]

NRG – Say it fast!!

April 17, 2011 by dubdoug

Nowadays Lucozade style drinks & > 130bpm bad dance music all use the term NRG. Back in 1978 we had problems with this name. People would look at you with puzzled looks on their face & ask what does it mean! We’d ask them to “say it fast”.  And they’d say NERG?   We played 70% original songs along with Clash, Radiators & Ramones covers in Dundalk pubs & the Magnet in Pearse St, Dublin. A couple of support gigs […]

Mid 60s photo from Butlins Mosney

April 17, 2011 by dubdoug

As 6 kids we had a good few day trips & stays to Butlins in Mosney in the 60s &  early 70s. I don’t know where the rest of us are for this photo?? We loved these holidays. I was delighted when my Dad bought me this fab John Hinde Butlins photography book a few years ago.
